Writer's picture: Jo CushingJo Cushing

Plasticine is a fantastic tool for children to develop their motor skills and their creativity.

They can shape, cut, roll and assemble balls of clay of various colors in order to obtain a unique shape. It will also encourage their imagination as the possibilities of creation are endless.

Finally, modeling clay is really easy to make at home ! Making your own will assure you that only the best ingredients were used for your children.

You will need :

  • 1 cup of flour

  • 1/2 cup of baking soda or 1 packet of baking powder

  • food coloring

  • ½ cup of salt

  • 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil

  • 1 cup of hot water

  • essential oils (optional)

1. In a saucepan, mix all the dry ingredients. Add the oil then the water gradually while stirring.

2. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the mixture thickens.

3. As soon as the dough starts to peel off from the bottom of the pan, turn off the heat.

4. Let cool and knead by hand.

5. Divide the dough into as many pieces as the number of food colorings you have. Put each piece in a different container.

6. Add the colorings to each of the containers.

7. You can also add a few drops of essential oils to perfume the plasticine. You can add a drop of almond or vanilla essential oil.

This homemade modeling clay can be easily stored for several months if it is stored in airtight boxes. If it dries, just wet your hands and knead it a little! Or, if it sticks, add a little flour!
