Hands are often the hardest body parts to draw, along with feet. With this tutorial, you will learn how to draw a perfect hand, starting from a square shape.
1) A quick sketch
Draw a rectangle that is slightly flared at the top.
In the bottom left corner, mark the thumb pad.
Draw the wrist. Be careful not to align it with your hand ! The end of an arm is always thinner than the base of the hand.
2) Placing fingers
Sketch the thumb in two parts, with a strong base starting fromthe palm, and a thin, almost pointed end.
Mark the locations of the other 4 fingers with half circles. Leave a little space between them.
Add a small “roof” representing the middle finger. The longest finger is, approximately, the same size as the palm: you can easily find its location.
3) Sketching fingers
Draw the fingers, making them slightly thinner towards the ends. Follow the limits of the "roof". The little finger is always a little more separated from the other three (play with your hand for a moment to realize it): draw it a little behind, it will give a real impression of naturalness.
Slightly draw the knuckles.
4) Details
You do not need to draw all the folds of the hand. However, it is always good to mark the folds of the thumb, the hollow of the hand and some knuckles. Of course, if you do not draw a hand in close-up as here, you can very well do without these details.
Don’t forget that you can always take a look at your own model !
