PAINT LIKE PIET MONDRIAN

Writer's picture: Jo CushingJo Cushing

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a famous dutch painter and one of the pioneers of the abstract art movement. Abstract art does not represent subjects or objects, but shapes, lines and colors.

For this painting, you will need :

- a sheet of paper (thick paper)

- 5 colors of gouache (red, yellow, blue, gray and black)

- a black marker pen

- a ruler (at least 30 cm, so that it can cover the entire length of the sheet)

  1. Start by drawing several thick perpendicular lines with the marker. Go to the edges of your sheet. Don’t do too many boxes and not too small: your drawing must remain clear.

  2. Fill in the boxes with gouache: do not overload too much in color, leave some of the boxes in white. They will create a balance in your painting.

  3. Careful : color must be applied evenly, and without going beyond the edges!

Mondrian inspired a lot of artists and makers, who used his patterns on clothes or furniture. Now, it is your turn to take inspiration from him !
